If you are like most Pastors, you have read many books, attended growth conferences, and attended numerous seminars seeking for answers to how to deal with this frustrating lack of spiritual growth and transformation among your people.
Perhaps you have even tried copying the methods of apparently bigger and more successful churches, but with no real success.
Many Pastors have tried all of these things and more, looking for that silver bullet that will help them jump start their congregation on the road to Christ-like transformation. If you have been one of these Pastors, hopefully you have come to realize that the answer to experiencing true life-changing transformation within your congregation is not going to be found in some new program, technique, or technology. The key to experiencing true life-changing transformation is to develop a Biblical discipleship process that will work in your church, with your people, and within your culture.
As a Pastor, how do you develop a Biblically based discipleship program within your church?
In reality developing a workable Biblically based discipleship program requires a lot of Bible study and many years of work. Fortunately Pastor Ronald Thorington, PhD., has done extensive research and study on Biblical methods used to develop disciples and bring about transformed lives.
This research and study spanning over 25 years, coupled with 40 years of active Pastoral ministry, and his recently completed Doctorate of Philosophy in Pastoral Ministries makes him uniquely qualified to speak to this subject. In fact, the dissertation for his doctorate dealt with the subject of the lack of Biblical transformation among Christian Americans offers practical, godly advice on how pastors can encourage true transformation among their flock.
Dr. Thorington’s years of research, study, and experience show that the key to success in bringing about transformation within a congregation is developing an effective Biblically based discipleship process within a church. It is Dr. Thorington’s desire to help as many Pastors and Christian leaders as possible develop a Biblically based discipleship process in their churches. Pastor Thorington wants to share his many years of work by making available his Life Transforming Discipleship Course. As a result of sharing this material on a worldwide basis during many conferences; his materials are currently being used not only in America, but also in Canada, England, France, Uganda, and Rwanda.
Rather than having this work published he is now making it accessible for downloading from the Internet. Pastors just like you, from all over the world, can now have access to these materials for use in their churches simply by enrolling electronically. Pastors are invited to examine a portion of the material to evaluate it before making any decision about enrolling. So please, preview and enroll soon to start the process of bringing about the life-changing transformation you long to see within your congregation.
I have a testimony of salvation and deliverance from a spirit that tormented me of drugs and depression.
I would go to church every Sunday living on a spiritual rollercoaster. Some Sundays were good and powerful. Some Sundays I felt I was just there as nothing more than a pew warmer, not truly knowing what my next move is. What now? How much more of me and my heart am I supposed to give to Christ and anyone else for that matter? Am I supposed to be more active in the church?
I considered myself at the time after five and half years a baby in Christ. I was truly not seeing the bigger picture with my heart. My husband and I decided to take the Life Transforming Discipleship Course, to gain a better understanding of what our walk is to be like for Christ. Half way through I started to notice big changes in my husband’s heart. I started to think about it, then God started to reveal to me of how I’ve been seeking for the love of Christ. I came to the point of repenting of my anger, and cried out to God to replace it with love, and He did. I finally came to the point in my walk where I identified what was most important: studying God’s word, being in prayer, and giving God all the glory in worship and praise.
These things are all equal in our daily walk with Christ, not one is greater than the other. This is what strengthens our relationship with our Lord. It brought me to a place where obedience to Christ means more to me than what the flesh desires. Big changes came in our marriage once we decided to commit to becoming disciples of Christ. There was correction, direction, encouragement, and heart transformation.
We have both come to the place ready to be used to fulfill the purpose, plan, and the will of our savior. We are both ready to fulfill the Great Commission and to glorify His kingdom because He is worthy.
At the age of fourteen, my uncle Bob witnessed to me of his new found life with Christ and invited me to church. The next Sunday, at church with my uncle, I heard the gospel message for the first time.
For the first time I heard God had created me to have a relationship with Him, but that this relationship had been ruined by sin. For the first time I heard that Jesus had died for my sins so that I could have a relationship with God the Father.
In my spirit, I knew that these things were true and when they gave an alter call that day, I went forward to accept the Lord Jesus as my Savior; but there were problems and by the age of seventeen I was no longer walking with the Lord.
During the three years I was going to church, I was at church every time the doors were open. I read my Bible on a daily basis and prayed frequently, sometimes for hours at a time. There was nothing I wanted more than to honor and serve the Lord. There was nothing I wanted more than to have a relationship with God. So how did I end up walking away from God for over twenty years? The answer was simple, no one discipled me.
Because no one discipled me I did not understand how to live the Christian life. I did not understand the difference between faith as opposed to feelings and emotions. I did not understand the nature of temptation and believed that being tempted (desiring to do something contrary to the will of God) was the same as sinning. I did not understand that as a Christian I would still face temptation. I did not understand what it really meant to be saved, to be sanctified, or to be filled with the Holy Spirit. I did not understand about bringing my thoughts, words, and actions under the Lordship of Christ. I did not understand that accepting Christ as savior was only the first step of my journey with God.
No one taught me that I then had to become a disciple of Christ and learn to follow Him and yield every area of my life to Him. My uncle and the good people of that church brought me to a place of salvation, but never completed the task. They got me saved, but no one took the time to disciple me and I often wondered why that was. I believe that the reason no one discipled me was simply that the good folks of my church did not know how to do so. The good folks of my church had no idea how to systematically teach me to be a disciple of Christ, how to fight the good fight of faith, or how to honor and serve God with and through my life.
In recent years, I have come across an amazing tool for discipling people called “The Life Transforming Discipleship Course” created and developed by Pastor Doctor Ronald Thorington, Phd.
As I went through this interactive course, I was amazed at how it so clearly and systematically taught me the basics of Salvation (how to be saved and know it); taught me to fight the good fight of faith (temptation versus sin, how to resist sin); taught me how to be a servant of the Lord and how to be a servant leader; taught me to honor God by serving Him and His’ church; and taught me how to worship the Lord.
As I went through this course I realized that it answered every question that so greatly vexed me as a new believer; and realized that if this course had been made available to me as a new believer, God and I would have never lost out on the over twenty years that I had wandered away. Those twenty plus lost years did not have to be, they could have been avoided if someone had discipled me, if someone had presented me with the information contained in the “Life Transforming Discipleship Course.”
Having gone through The Life Transforming Discipleship Course, and knowing firsthand how important it is to be discipled, I would highly recommend church leaders make this course available to their congregations and highly recommend the course to all believers.
When discipleship training is based on scriptural principles and methods it will be transformational. Through a study of biblical discipleship we discovered the biblical principles and methods that produce transformation. Many churches are rediscovering biblical discipleship and are returning to its simplicity and effectiveness.
No transformation occurs without the working of the Holy Spirit in a person’s life. One can have the best discipleship programs money can buy, but without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in a person’s life there will be no transformation. A person must be born again in order to experience transformation. After a person is born again he must continue to surrender to the working of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit can make changes in those who cooperate with Him. One cannot transform oneself
Discipleship does not just happen by accident. At Victory International we have an organized plan for making disciples.
A major hindrance to spiritual growth in many churches is the lack of an organized plan of discipleship. We have an organized plan that is beneficial for follow-up on new converts to disciple them, as well as a way to stimulate the spiritual growth of those who have been Christians for some time. Many pastors mistakenly assume that if they can get people to attend church faithfully, those will eventually grow spiritually and become committed disciples. No doubt some have grown spiritually without a church plan for discipleship, but that happens more by accident than by design.
We do more than just preach and teach and hope for results. We have a much higher retention rate with our new converts because we have implemented an effective system of nurturing. We have a system that both cares for the new converts while stimulating the more mature to continue their spiritual journey of transformation.
We are a community of believers who put a priority on relational discipleship. As we grow as a community of believers that love each other, we want to establish relationships that are built on trust. Trust in relationships can only develop in an atmosphere of love demonstrated by an abundance of mercy, grace, and much patience for each other. We believe that out of those relationships we can build each other up thus enable us to experience spiritual growth and transformation.
Transformational discipleship cannot just happen because someone attends a class or completes a course. In order for discipleship to be transformational it must be built on relationships of trust where people feel that they have the freedom to be open and honest about themselves. We intentionally promote the building of relationships so as to enhance the transformational process. We like to think of ourselves as a spiritual family that takes care of each other.
We encourage the building of relationships to happen in three directions. First, we need to have a Paul to Timothy relationship with someone where a more mature disciple will mentor someone less mature. Secondly, we also need Paul to Barnabas relationships where believers of similar spiritual levels can encourage each other in their spiritual development.
And finally we all need to have someone who we respectfully consider more mature work with us and keep us accountable. It is Victory’s desire to raise up many spiritually mature believers who can be spiritual parents by caring for spiritual infants (those just saved) and newer believers who are in the early stages of spiritual development.
Discipleship training must be informational. The Life Transforming Discipleship Course covers all the basic things a person needs to know about discipleship. There are eighteen lessons that cover essential topics. These lessons cover a full spectrum of topics starting with how to become a child of God to becoming a spiritual mentor. The lesson format is constructed in such a way that the student finds the answers through looking up hundreds of scriptures. The student finds out what the Bible has to say on many topics and also becomes familiar with the books of the Bible. The learning will not just be from reading the material and scriptures but also from a discipleship group leader or a mentor who is personally working involved. The course comes in three levels of difficulty with differing amounts of information. The Beginning Level for new Christians has the minimal about of information and only covers the first two stages while the Basic Level covers all four stages. The Advanced level has about twice amount of information as does the Basic Level.
One essential element necessary for transformation is putting into practice what is being learned. Christians just get more information every week through hearing sermons but may never be truly impacted by those sermons. It is crucial to make sure people are putting into practice what they are learning. For transformation to occur there must be accountability to know if what is learned is being applied.
A key element that makes this discipleship training material so effective is the fulfillment of the required applications after each lesson and the progress report at the end of each stage. A student cannot progress to the next stage unless he is practicing what he has learned. Each student will have a mentor who will make sure he is learning the material with accountability regarding practicing the principles involved.

Because Victory International is an inner-city church, one of the major factors for our church and parishioners is cost. By writing our own materials, we have significantly reduced the cost to the individuals taking the course. It is our purpose to keep the materials as affordable as possible; to those in our church and also for other churches who choose to use this material. All that it will cost is the small donation for enrolling your church, the cost of paper and ink to print out your own copies of the material, and three ring notebooks to hold the lessons.
